Keeping baby cool

Sunglasses, hat and sun cream are the obvious contenders for keeping safe in the sun, but these last few weeks have been sweltering. Here are a few ways I’ve found to keep cool with baby:

baby, mummy, newmummyblog, paddling pool, groegg, heatwave
1. A paddling pool! Good for baby but also for you, even if it is just your toes!

2. Use a room thermometer – we love the Groegg, it’s just so obvious! Our baby monitor also has a thermometer.

3. Adjust the windows, blinds, curtains every half hour to keep the house as cool as possible.

4. Going for a walk – Baby H isn’t a great napper, going for a walk is the only way of calming down her grumpy over tired moods.

5. A light car seat cover (see my post last week on making a car seat cover myself), stops baby being as sweaty after car journeys. I’m going to make one for the pushchair as well so expect a blog post on that later this week! Also going for a car journey is a great way to get baby to sleep in the heat (as long as your air con works well!)

6. A thin baby sleeping bag – baby H has 0.5 tog and 1.5 tog and sometimes just goes to bed in a nappy and sleeping bag, she seems to be much warmer than us!

7. Let baby play with her Tommee Tippee cup (over 6 months only!). By leaving the cup beside her on playmat, she can take a drink when she wants but also figures out how to use it. Mostly she shakes it, but this just means she learns that water comes out if it (and conveniently it kept her cool too)

8. Ice cubes/frozen milk -Baby H loves ice cubes! I think they’re also nice on her gums and it ensures she gets some water.

9. Watery fruits – Baby H loves grapes and strawberries in her fruit holder and sticks of melon, all of which keep her nice and hydrated. It’s amazing how little is left in the fruit holder once she’s been munching!

10. A buggy shade – I have a pop up shade and I don’t really think it helps. I keep having to move it and most of the time it just flaps about. All of my friends have recommended the Snoozeshade, so I’m going to order one asap!

Of course don’t forget the sun cream, sunglasses and hat! And, don’t make my mistake of remembering these for baby, and forgetting mine! Red shoulders are not fun -oooooops!

Do you have any other ideas? I’d love to hear them!

Lynne x

We’ve got short PJs for our toddler and the baby has been sleeping in vests because of the muggy heat. An idea I’ve just read on another blog is freezing bottle of squash – obviously for older kids. I really must get one of those fruit holders! #thelist

Sleeping in a vest is a great idea, some nights when it’s been 25C+, H sleeps in a nappy and 0.5 tog sleeping bag. The sleeping bag is part of her bedtime routine, so we try to find a way to let her wear it!
The fruit holder is really good, and she can try lots of things I’d be more wary of her choking on. X
