Mummy Friends

Mummy-hood is a completely different life, it’s a brilliant, amazing and wonderful experience. However, I would be lost without my mummy friends. It’s very strange, I met these girls a year ago this weekend, but now, they are the people who know most about our lives. We know each others birth stories, the post-partum craziness, and, all that comes with it, which I would never tell anyone else. I’m very lucky, we meet up all the time as we all live within 20 minutes of each other, so it’s been such a relief having friendly faces a stones throw away.

Where did I find these lovely ladies I hear you ask? Hubby and I did the National Childbearing Trust (NCT) antenatal course, where we learnt about birth, what happens, post natal depression, our birth options, gained understanding to how we might feel and how to help each other through the birth and first weeks. All of this was great, however, the most valuable outcome was a fantastic group of friends. We’re all new to mummy-hood and meet up at least once a week -our babies play while we have cake and coffee. It’s lovely knowing Baby H is growing up with some lovely friends. We’ve seen each others babies grow and change which is such an amazing journey. Sometimes we also go out for dinner, leaving our other halves in charge, while have yummy food and we laugh so hard it hurts. We really should do it more!

Don’t get me wrong, our other friends are also invaluable, and the most amazing support and just great friends. It’s just nice having a group of friends going through the same experiences at the same time. When Baby H (who slept through from 5 weeks) started waking numerous times a night, we discovered we were all experiencing the four month regression. It was so reassuring to know we weren’t alone. Yes, I read the internet forums and the books, but knowing friends were having the same sleepless nights was much more reassuring. It was also an added bonus that I could message the girls at 3am to arrange coffee the next morning! They are there through every bump, burp, sick, tooth and coffee.

Now, I have to add our family are there through all of this too, and are awesome. They all love their little granddaughter so so much and would be here in a flash when needed. My mum is at end of the phone and Skype, but having friends to share this with, friends who H will grow up with and hopefully like me, still be friends with in 30 odd years, is something  we have to nourish. My mum did NCT and one of the other babies was my best friend throughout high school, and bridesmaid at my wedding. I hope to remain friends with our NCT group for  many years to come, and hope little H makes friends for life as well.

If you’re wondering what I’m on about or just interested there is lots of info on courses on the NCT website.

There are other courses and I think the NHS do some too, but I would recommend the NCT course 100%.

Did you do a course too? Did you find your mummy friends in a different way?

Lynne x

I found my mummy friends through a facebook group. I totally agree, they are invaluable. The get it when I’m really late and wearing gross clothes. Plus I can tell them about wanting to chuck the baby out of the window and they don’t rush to call child services.

It’s always nice to have set of friends that you can go out sometimes when you want to unwind and it’s such a bonus if your friends are mummy’s too so you have a lot of things in common and share. I do have friends nearby but most of them doesn’t have kids, so when they plan to have a day out, most of the time, I can’t make it if hubby is at work, or sometimes I’ll attend but I have to drag the two kids with me, which means I don’t enjoy much. Lovely post! #KCACOLS

Wow, that’s so amazing that your mum’s NCT friend’s daughter was bridesmaid at your wedding! I didn’t do NCT but met a lovely group of friends at some post-natal sessions run by our health visitors. I didn’t realise I needed new friends, but like you say it is so great to have friends with children who are going through the same things as you, I don’t know what I would have done without them! #coolmumclub

My best friend in the world is a woman I met through my Mothers Group in Australia. I love my mumma friends because they get it. But I love my friends without kids too because they let me live vicariously through their lives! Mel xx #AnythingGoes

I wish I had done NCT, although I did a couple of baby groups after and made some good friends through them. Sadly, having moved to the US, I had to start the process again, but I have also started to make some good mummy friends here too. We really do need them 🙂 #anythinggoes

I really want to make some new friends as I live in a new area so don’t have any friends around here. I didn’t know about NCT as I was with One to one midwives and feel like I missed out. I need to try and get out there and meet other mums. Have met a few but their babies are older and they already have a group x

You’re so right — It so important to have mum-friends! We didn’t do any kind of antenatal because my kids were both adopted and a bit of a surprise each time. I really envy the groups of mums I see out with each other!

We don’t have local NCT classes. Hubby and I attended classes in the local hospital way back in my first pregnancy (15 years ago) but none of the mums lived anywhere near me. I met all my mum friends in mother and toddler groups which I forced myself to start going to when the twins were 8 weeks old just to get out of the house! Thanks for linking up with #sundaystars x

I’m not a mum, so I have no experience of this particular group, but I agree that in any situation having good friends who are going through the same thing as you is invaluable to your sanity 🙂

You are so lucky to have found a group of mums that are going through the same experience than you. I haven’t had that opportunity but I really would like to as I know it is important to have that support. My little one is now 1 yo so I will look for baby and mum clubs around my area. I know it will make a difference for me. Great post! Thank you so much for linking up with me at #KCACOLS. I would love if you join me again tomorrow.
