Strawberry Picking near Cheltenham (Primrose Vale PYO & play area)

We love strawberries in our house and have been meaning to try strawberry picking with H this summer. So last week, cutting it fine before summer was over, we popped to Primrose Vale, on the outskirts of Cheltenham to try their strawberry picking and meet a few play group friends for their summer meet up. Primrose Vale is actually located between Cheltenham and Gloucester and just off the M5/A417, so is really easy to get to from all around the Cotswolds. They’re really well known for brilliant pick your own, from plums to blackberries and strawberries, they cover all sorts of fruits and try to cycle through different picking areas to stay open as much as possible. It’s been so popular this year they’ve had no strawberries available to pick on some days.

Well, first off, I have to highlight the facilities for little ones. Look at this play area! There’s a huge sand pit with digger (yes, it looks as old as me, but it works and the kids all loved it), slides on a ‘mud’ hill, swings, a cute ramshackle playhouse and umpteen ride ons for little ones.

We actually spent two or so hours with the little ones running around and playing here. We also had some lunch. They serve quite a bit of food from sandwiches and paninis (for about ?4) to a tea cake (for only ?1.30) and cakes too.

The strawberry picking was really good. All we had to do was pick up a punnet in the shop entrance, and then follow the signs to the picking areas. Toddler H loved it, she held my hand and as it was all fairly flat, it was perfect for her. I was impressed at how well she behaved, having just ran around like crazy for a couple of hours I really thought she might want to run under all the plants, through the (very few) puddles from the irrigation and well, anywhere she felt like really. She didn’t, she was really perfect and loved pointing “more” at all the strawberries I should pick. She quickly learned that we only pick the red ones and not the green, and don’t eat them either! One cheeky bite was all she had.

I’d thoroughly recommend visiting Primrose Vale if you’re in the area, and popping to the farm shop. The smell of juicy strawberries hits you as soon as you walk in.

[…] Primrose Vale PYO near Cheltenham has to be in our top five local activities and I’ve written about it’s Easter and Halloween before. Primrose Vale is a lovely morning/afternoon out. We pick some strawberries, play in the play park (which has just been redone), have a picnic and maybe an ice cream or coffee. […]
