Selsley Common Dinosaurs and where to find them when you visit

Today we took a trip down to Selsley Common just south of Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, to see the Selsley Common dinosaurs. The common is a lovely place for a walk and picnic with fantastic views. I’d thoroughly recommend it. However, right now I’m July 2020, we also wanted to see the Selsley Common dinosaurs made by a family during lockdown. You have to know where to look for them, so do scroll down to see my maps and directions to find the dinosaurs.

Selsley Common Dinosaurs, Gloucesteshire July 2020 post lockdown family walk with view into the distance

We thought Selsley Common was a perfect afternoon out and the perfect place to take a picnic. There was lots of room for the girls to run around, lovely views and the hunt for the dinosaurs was the icing on the cake.

We had a good wander around (in the wrong direction) looking for the dinosaurs which are in fact 10 minutes walk from the car parks. However, as the girls ran off their picnic on our hunt for the dinosaurs it wasn’t that bad a thing.

Follow our walk, and see the dinosaurs for yourselves – video coming soon!

Selsley Common is only around 25 minutes drive from Cheltenham and really worth it. The views across Gloucestershire, the River Severn and to Wales were absolutely lovely. Even on a cloudy day.

Finding Selsley Common location:

The Selsley Common postcode (GL5 5LH) does not take you to the car parks, instead type “Selsley Common” into Google Maps to get your directions.

The car parks are located on Selsley Hill.

If you have a look under my Instagram stories you will see all the maps and why the postcode doesn’t work or take you to the right place.

🌟 Where are the dinosaurs?

To find the dinosaurs walk straight with the car parks behind you, this will be flat and then there will be a hump in front of you (the long barrow), at this point go around or over the long barrow and then follow the path on the other side of the long barrow to the right.

Or, from the car parks, head straight veering right, (kind of diagonal) again with the car parks behind you follow paths that take you in roughly that direction in the direction of trees at the far right of the common – the dinosaurs are near here.

When you reach the long barrow you have to follow the paths that go to the right (or the path to the right, just before the long barrow). The long barrow is the big hump of ground before the drop.

🌟 Parking?

There are 4 car parks on the right as you drive along Selsley Hill (B4066), which is way more than I expected. I’ve popped a picture of Google maps satellite image above which shows the dinosaurs locations and the car parks as well as where the Long Barrow is located.

If you miss the first car park, there are 3 more so don’t worry!

🌟 Pushchair friendly?

Not really unless it’s a off roader. Yes the walk is flat (unless you go down to the dinosaurs in the quarry), but the paths aren’t really paths, just grass. You’d just get super annoyed at a pushchair friendly pushchair or stroller.

🌟 Walking time

If you go the right way 10 minutes. Quicker if you don’t have a 3 and 5 year old hugging and walking in the wrong direction half the time.
* It might take you 1 hour if you also have a picnic and walk the wrong way^!

🌟 Facilities

None… no toilets, no cafe/shop/takeaway

🌟 Cost

FREE

I hope this post has helped you discover a new place to visit, and something fun to do as a family this summer – let me know in the comments, or on social media… and of course SHARE this post with all your friends who would LOVE to visit 🙂
