Hair falling out after having a baby - 4 month postpartum hair loss

Postpartum hair loss is rubbish. Full stop. I hate it.

It’s horrible seeing clumps of hair in my brush, in my hands and in the drain. Seriously how can I just pull a clump of hair out? Then more, and more, and more. Why do I constantly have a hand full of hair just waking to be freed?

I remember 4.5 months after having Toddler H being struck by this quite suddenly and discovering that hair loss after having a baby is a thing. As levels of estrogen adjust, roughly at 3-4 months, after having a baby, your hair starts ‘fixing itself’. Basically all the hair that didn’t fallout when you were pregnant realises it needs to and does it all at once. Yay. Perfect. Just what every new mum wants. Not.

I did love my thick pregnancy hair and loved even more never having to shave my legs. Pregnancy rocked! Now I constantly seem to be shaving, it just seems to grow so fast now, huge black hairs on my legs. Each week, I frantically try to remember to shave before Toddler H’s swimming lesson, and huge apologies to our swimming friends on the days I’ve just not had time (or remembered).

With Baby B I started noticing clumps of hair falling out just 2 weeks after she was born. It has steadily got worse and now, at just over 4 months, this is my brush.

The brush was cleaned just before using. I’d already pulled out three handfuls of hair after my shower.

It is shocking, but just one of those things we have to go through. Another one of those things that no one mentions before birth. And no NCT class mentions either.

So new mummies, and mummies to be, if you are constantly battling a brush full of hair, you are not alone. It will stop. It will be fine. Get a new snazzy haircut, a new hair dye or even go all out and get a fringe, do something so you feel better, and it will help. Oh and buy some of those drain plug catchers so the hair doesn’t end up down the drain. Believe me unplugging the drains and see all that hair in one go IS heartbreaking.

So, if you have a clump of hair in your hand umpteen times a day, or a brush like mine, you’re not alone. Believe me, it will get better (baby centre says usually be 6 months!).

Argh this was one of my worst pregnancy and birth ‘things’… I suffered really badly after all three pregnancies and it continued for months which the GP put down to stress. Not fun. Just keep squeezing that baby and remember it was worth it xx
