We were thrilled to be asked by Asda to take part in their Power of Play campaign part of their effort to help raise money for Children in Need, and also their initiative to enjoy some creative play together. We were sent lots of goodies including ASDA’s free Power of Play cards and Children in Need clothing/headbands. Firstly I have to say, the Power of Play playing cards are brilliant, so get yourself down to an Asda and pick up your own FREE playing cards – they’ll keep your kids occupied and obviously learning through play!
We’ve had so much fun with them, and they aren’t just for Children in Need, but brilliant for any time… I think they’ll be brilliant particularly in school holidays as they encourage the children to find things and make things themselves while following their own initiative. The cards use items you’ve got around the house, turning household items into toys is something we’ve loved for many years – it’s lovey how kids are so inventive!
The girls made their own band using my kitchen cupboards and a few random items, such as a toy baby bottle… And obvious drumstick, don’t you know to a 2 year old!
They also enjoyed another early morning Power of Play card (I can see this being a morning routine when they’re both up so early!), Which involved them making a ball themselves and a goal…
H used a headband she was given when we visited the pre-launch of Ninja Warrior Adventure Park in Gloucester in October, knotted it (I didn’t realise she could tie so efficiently, never mind one after the other!), and got very inventive with her goal creation. She’s very resourceful, it seems!
I had great fun watching H make her goal as she took it very literally trying to find things to make an ‘arch’… “I need it to stand up,” she kept saying. My mop, a dive stick (previously gifted as we were an ambassador for Konfidence in 2018), and various toy baby items like bottles and a toy bottle warmer!
H also picked a card suggesting she make a robot out of boxes, toilet rolls and in essence scrap, however, as I left her to make my cup of tea, she decided to first make a paper robot and got nicely sidetracked!
So what is ASDA’s Power of Play campaign?
ASDA’s Power of Play initiative is highlighting the importance of play as an essential part of childhood development.
Our local Asda in #Cheltenham still had loads of headbands at all the tills at lunch time today as well as some t-shirts and other clothing, plus books all helping to raise money for Children in Need.
Asda aim to raise enough money to help BBC Children in Need give 30,000 disadvantaged children and young people across the UK the opportunity to develop life skills through play. To give them chances to enjoy physical activity, improve confidence and well-being as well as develop relationships with friends and peers whilst having fun.
What did we think?
We’ve had great fun with the playing cards creating and making all sorts with random things we have around the house. Each game spiralled to include other activities, something that made me think, we need more of these cards!
The girls also loved picking a card and finding out what their task was. I think if I’d just suggested we make a ball and goal, they’d have said no and suggested watching TV or, well, making a unicorn.
ASDA are keen to get everyone involved so you can get your own FREE playing cards at ASDA stores or join in with the in-store fundraising activity. Also, Pudsey products purchased from George at ASDA also help raise money, with donations going to Children in Need.
You can see what fun we had, so really do pick up your own set of free cards in your local Asda – I can’t stress how fab (and simple) the ideas are. We’ll definitely be making use of them again and again, and especially in school holidays!
