On our half term travels we were so excited to learn that Dippy the iconic dinosaur from the Natural History Museum, London was on tour and would be at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum while we were there.

As huge dinosaur fans and avid fossil collectors this was brilliant timing. Don’t let that put you off, you don’t need to know your bivalves from your brachiopods to enjoy this day out as Dippy is huge, a really wonder to see. All 292 plaster cast bones of him!

The atmosphere was brilliant and really exciting and everyone was wide eyed, kids with huge smiles and photos being taken left, right and centre. H is 4, and B, 20 months and they both really enjoyed our morning. We did have to explain a bit to H about how Dippy is a dinosaur skeleton cast, ‘so they made copies of all of his bones’ to help her understand. We found going to the fossil area of the museum really exciting too as she got very excited seeing the fossil fish scales and that also helped her understand the impressions more clearly. So it’s definitely worth seeing more than just Dippy, and if Dippy has already gone on to his next location, the museum is still a great place to visit with a 4 year old.

Dippy is on tour at the Kelvingrove until the 6th May so if you’re anywhere vaguely near Glasgow I’d recommend the visit.

The Kelvingrove museum also has some excellent animal displays, and fossil displays with brilliant explanations for kids. There’s obviously much more to see at the museum and we had a quick look at a few highlights which I’ll pop up separately.

The coffee was nice too!

#dippyontour really is touring the country and will be heading to Newcastle upon Tyne, Cardiff (we might have to go to see him again!, Rochdale and Norwich.
